Q & A

Q & A

Why did you choose your profession?

I have always been a “numbers” guy and after completing my undergraduate degree, my favorite professor felt that I would thrive in a financial planning and analysis role. I took his advice and even got my MBA, CMA, and CTP designations because I liked learning and adding to my skill toolkit. Helping a company plan budgets, cash forecasts, and optimize capital structures is what I enjoy doing.

Who is the one person who has done the most to shape you into who you are today? How was the person significant to you?

The manager who was most influential to me was the former CFO at Cole Real Estate Investments (Kirk M.). He hired me when he was the director of finance, and he was the one to promote me to manager and director. While he ran all the accounting (which was very large) and finance functions (which was much smaller), he would help me through areas where I was having difficulty, taught me new concepts, and worked with me through the budget season, but always gave me enough room to grow and succeed. I think he was most significant in that he had more confidence in my ability than I did, and he would let me know that I had the ability to do a lot more. He was probably the closest thing I have had to a mentor, and I was glad I got to work for and with him for almost nine years.

What has been the greatest accomplishment of your life so far? Is there anything you wish to do even better?

I think my greatest accomplishment has been my growth as a leader while working at Cole Real Estate Investments. I was there for about 18 months when I first got promoted, and it was an “off-cycle” promotion, where the CFO called me into his office and said I had already been doing manager-level work, so he needed to promote me and get me to hire some employees. While I don’t think I was great at leading when I first received the promotion, I have always done my best to train employees and invest time to improve their knowledge and expertise. Over time I believe I have improved as a manager, which might be from the confidence I have gained after leading teams for 15 years.

Maybe it is my nature, but I always think I can do everything better when I look back. I could have approached managing better by giving more autonomy and training staff on schedules that I was doing, giving me more time to manage and less time doing work that was probably below my level. I have had some feedback from my managers that I should let my teams do more, but I also don’t want them to have to work the crazy hours that I had to work, as I understand work/life balance is important.

How would your peers and team members describe your responsiveness as a leader?

I take great pride in my ability to plan and map out how to get things done, pay attention to how to do things right, and complete projects on time. My dedication shows in my work product, and my peers and team members have always voiced their satisfaction (to me specifically, or to others) with my process to take on new challenges, or attack problems as they arise.

TESTIMONIALS

"I had the pleasure of working for Tom as a Financial Analyst at Cole Capital from 2007 to 2009. His exceptional leadership and commitment to our team's success was inspiring and created a positive work culture. Tom served as a critical mentor early in my career, he always encouraged learning better ways to accomplish goals which ultimately built the foundation of my analytical skill set. He values his employees' opinions and is vested in their personal and professional growth, creating an environment where we always felt heard and empowered. I highly recommend Tom to any organization seeking a financial leader who can drive strategic initiatives and foster a positive work culture."

Leslie Ramey, Former Sr. Financial Analyst, Cole Real Estate Investments

"During my time working with Tom, I was consistently impressed by his work ethic and dedication to his job. He was always willing to go above and beyond to ensure that tasks were completed accurately and efficiently.  He knew the details of the company's operations, policies, history, and general ledger system and was always willing to share this knowledge with team members to help them complete their best work."

Sara Grisham – Vice President of Financial Reporting

"I had the privilege of having Tom as a mentor early in my career. We all have that pivotal person in our careers who grants us an opportunity when it arises and encourages us to continue to develop our skills; Tom was that person for me when he was working at CIM Group and continues to be long after that. He not only encouraged but insisted on my continuous self-investment, urging me to enroll in the CFA program and take courses in Excel. When I expressed my desire to transition to a department more aligned with my career aspirations, Tom not only supported me but also facilitated the process. From constructing fund cash flow models in Excel to cultivating relationships with partner departments, Tom seamlessly navigated tasks that required entirely different skill sets. His door was always open for project discussions, even under the pressure of looming deliverables. Under Tom's guidance, I learned to craft narratives from the data at hand, automate manual processes using power query/VBA, and improve my business/financial acumen through extensive practice in financial models he developed. Beyond being one of the brightest professionals I know, Tom's knowledge extends far beyond his professional domain. His extensive travels to countless countries allow him to vividly recount experiences, from where he dined to the activities he engaged in.

Tom has left an indelible impact on my career, and I wouldn't be where I am today without his support. This support has been consistent from his role as my direct report at CIM Group to the present. Whether you need a listening ear or a helping hand, you can always rely on Tom. He takes pride in bringing his best to work every day, and collaborating with him is a breeze. Tom sets an exemplary standard for everyone around him and serves as a role model for the entire team. I wholeheartedly recommend Tom, and I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to work with him again."
